Wellness Wednesday- What to Put in Your Pet First Aid Kit

Accidents happen no matter how careful you are. Having a pet first aid kit can help alleviate some of the panic you feel when something happens to your pet.

Some items to include in a basic pet first aid kit include

-gauze pads

-gauze bandage rolls

-1 inch medical tape

-Vet wrap

-a thermometer

-KY jelly

-eye wash

-a wound cleaner

-styptic powder

-bandage scissors

-oral syringe

-piller or pill pockets

-activated charcoal

-triple antibiotic ointment

-diarrhea aid*(ask vet for recommendation)

-Latex gloves

-muzzle or gauze to make a soft muzzle

-phone number for Pet Poison Control

-phone number for your vet/emergency clinic

*ask your vet for a dosage for your size pet

Along with discussing a diarrhea aid and medication dose for your pet, ask your vet what they recommend to induce vomiting. There may come a time when you have to make your pet vomit after they eat something they shouldn’t. But remember only induce vomiting when advised by your vet because there are times when it is more dangerous to have your pet vomit.

keep the items in a container that is in an easy to reach spot. You may even want to put together 2 kits- 1 for the house and 1 for the car.

Now you are ready if something should happen.

Do you have emergency kit for your pet?

Tackle boxes make great kits.  While you’re at it, add in things for the humans.  Band-aids, aspirin, etc.  Nail trimmers are good for broken toe nails.  A boot for protecting foot injuries.  Rescue Remedy to calm your animal in a stressful situation.

  •  @mdweitzel Great recommendations! I would make sure to keep the human medication separate from any pet medication to since there are meds that are toxic to pets.

  • This is definitely a blog worth following.
