Dawn – Do you know if there is any truth to not letting your dog have ice, because the coldness can break the enamel of their teeth?
@mdweitzel The coldness wouldn’t cause a problem but the hardness of the ice could. That’s the risk anytime you let your dog chew on something hard such as those marrow bones. I had a dachshund who was a big chewer and he did eventually end up with “slab” fractures on his carnassial teeth (aka those humongous molars). It doesn’t happen with every dog, but it’s something to beware of and know there is a risk.
Thanks for asking! It’s nice to put that dental hygiene degree I got to some use!! :>)
@demik3
Thank you! I’ve always heard conflicting answers. Steel has horrible teeth, with slab fractures on both top molars. She was taken off her mom WAY too early and she didn’t get what she needed. It also resulted in a twice broken leg before she was four months old. Anyhow, I know she would love to be a chewer, but biscuits and doggy slushies is as good as she gets.
