War dogs have many roles including sentry dogs, scout/patrol dogs, messenger dogs, mine dogs, casualty dogs, tunnel dogs and explosive detection dogs. The list of breeds that were accepted into the military war dog program in 1942 included breeds such as the Standard Poodle, Dalmations and Briards. That has been narrowed as the program progressed over the years.
