Flea Invasion- Infographic

With the unusual mild winter we had, this year is gearing up to be a big one for fleas. I used to have a whole flea spiel I would give people when I worked at the vet hospital. My favorite fact was that for every 1 flea you see on your pet, there are hundreds more in various forms (eggs, larvae, pupae) in the environment. Not too many people were thrilled with that scenario.

Have you seen any fleas yet?

Another great (and horrifying) infographic. I wrestled with fleas when Agatha and Christie came up from their spaying trip at the vets infested with them. One of the most horrible times in my life. What I have learned over the years, however, is that fleas tend to bother dogs with weakened immune systems more than healthy dogs. I found that as I learned more about nutrition and fed my dogs better, they became less susceptible to fleas.

That might not be true for everyone. But we lived next to a vacant house in Philly filled with flea-covered, feral cats. I never saw a flea on Agatha and Christie by that time and I think it was because of their excellent diet.

  •  @somethingwagging I agree the immune system can play a part in flea problems. I remember 2 cocker spaniels coming in from the same family where the female was loaded with fleas and the male had just a few. She never had quite the same healthy appearance he did.

I’ve been lucky the last few years, but I tend to be a little over zealous in monitoring for fleas. With the number of furry pets I have I don’t want a problem to even start.
